Carl Jung said: “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
We can all resolve to look inwards more often, but even the most inwardly aware person has blind spots.
And the higher up the corporate ladder you climb, the less likely you are to receive or even ask for feedback. This can come at a high cost – for you as the leader, for your team and organisation, and for your family and friends.
Senior leaders can easily find themselves surrounded by people who may lack the capacity and/or the courage or generosity of spirit to provide them with the feedback they most need. As Kouze & Posner said, “You may be surrounded by unloving critics and uncritical lovers, when you really need loving critics”.
What’s more, creating the right conditions for this kind of feedback isn’t always easy. Despite this, it is essential we keep finding new angles and vantage points with which to see our inner selves, however high we get and however hard it seems.
The more clearly we see our inner state, the more clearly we see our greatness and our blind spots. And with that ‘in-sight’, we can have a more profound and lasting impact on our families, teams, organisations, communities, country and world.
Bill O’Brien, CEO of Hanover Insurance, was asked to sum up the most important thing he’d learned about leading profound change. He said, “The success of an intervention depends on the interior condition of the intervenor.”
Is it time for you to start looking inside? Or to look for way to see past your blind spots?
- Time for a cuppa? Got a dog or a human you can grab (gently)? Can you go for a walk or sit in nature? It’s time to ponder.

- How have you created a safe culture where people feel a healthy bonding and belonging to willingly care about each other’s personal growth?
- How well are you creating a better world for yourself, family, organisation and future generations through your intentional growth?
